In a recently published article here at Daily Joystick we advised that April 15 is the D-Day for the Xbox Live service for the Original Xbox. Microsoft is disconnecting the original Xbox Live servers as part of an internal restructuring, thus prevent games built on the original Xbox Live from functioning online.
Notably, one of the largest games still played today on Xbox Live is of course, Bungies Halo 2. Halo 2 was the game that launched the studio into triple-A status as essentially made LIVE what it is today. It started the community, and today you can image, fans of both the original Xbox and Halo 2, are not impressed.
Here’s what Bungie said in an official statement from their website.
"We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end. But looking back we're incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans. Halo 2 has been at the top of the Xbox Live charts for original games since it launched over five years ago. We're extremely thankful to everyone who has played, enjoyed and supported Halo 2 over Xbox Live. We've had some great fun together, including far too many Humpday [where fans could fight it out with Bungie] losses to even recount."
The Halo fans were of course quite vocal, and expressed their feelings of disappointment on the official Halo 2 forums. It is completely understandable that fans would feel disappointed, but I guess now they have no choice but to move on to Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST and Halo Reach, but I think this is harder to do than one may think.
